I picked up a used James Michener book last week for a pretty penny fifty to be exact; I love used bookstores. Written in the story takes takes place in which describes a very, very primitive Afghanistan but one that has hope of a bright future one day. Without getting into politics, I found this exchange intriguing:.

The word is also rendered as caravansary , caravansaray , caravanseray , caravansara , and caravansarai. The word serai is sometimes used with the implication of caravanserai. A number of place-names based on the word sarai have grown up: Mughal Serai , Sarai Alamgir and the Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway station for example, and a great many other places are also based on the original meaning of "palace".
Qabir is an invented name, but the facts associated with it are not. The massive nomad convocation met at no regular place, and where it did meet bore no proper name, for the land is unbelievably wild, empty and unknown. It was called merely The Abul Camp and was probably larger than I suggest. Also, the subsidiary camps for attendant families seem to have been farther from the trading center than I have indicated. The Abul Camp was for men only. Until no known outsider had ever visited the camp, so that events depicted in this novel are anachronistic by eight years.
