Be Yourself! Be Exceptional! Be Bravura!
Updated: March 1, pm. The second annual "Beauty and the Feast" at the Rescue Mission of Roanoke could have been a dress rehearsal for this weekend's Outstanding Preteen and Teen pageants. Miss Virginia's Outstanding Teen , Courtney Jamison, played the piano in the mission's waiting room. Contestants smiled and welcomed Rescue Mission guests into the dining room, teen hostesses answered and asked questions at the table, and preteen servers delivered hot, overfilled bowls of home-cooked food to each table -- quite a talent. On Tuesday, 56 contestants served guests a "family-style" lunch of baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans and corn on the cob over three hours. Between bites, contestant hostesses at each table chatted with guests, while other contestants restocked silverware, poured cups of sweet tea and apple juice and scooped ice cream. Miss Hanover's Outstanding Teen, Maddie Pelgrim, said that talking comes naturally to her and the other contestants. Leslie Littlefield, Rescue Mission volunteer coordinator, and Linda Haas, director of both youth pageant programs, organized the Rescue Mission event.
How does one balance a teenage lifestyle, title of MAOTeen VA, a high school career, and so much more at the same time? This year has certainly been difficult, but it has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I am a stickler for making charts and lists to organize my thoughts as well as everything that needs to be done. I found scheduling time with friends outside of school, staying on top of my school work, and planning and attending appearances was easier to handle because of my time-management skills. Tell our readers a bit about how you prepared for competing in MAOTeen?
